Big Valley Bison is a bison ranch situated in the native grass and rolling hills just north east of the small town of Big Valley in central Alberta. The land and grass is as natural as it was 100 years ago. No sprays or pesticides ever.
This pristine native land ranch has been under the ownership and meticulous stewardship of Dale Mailer for more than thirty years. The ranch is managed with the understanding of the relationships between the animals, the land, the soil, the grass and their stewards. It is only with making sure that each is managed to be at premium health and top quality can we ensure that our bison are some of the best premium protein and choice meat you choose to feed your family
Ginger Novakowski- you may have heard the saying, I liked it so much, I bought the farm...well that is sort of the case. "I joined the operation over a decade ago after my husband and I discovered the benefits of this bison meat. Specifically, for our family, this meat does not irritate a painful neuralgia nerve condition where other meats do. This is a premium lean high protein alternative that has been a huge benefit in allowing us to add a quality, nutrient packed, meat back into our meals".
Our bison are conscientiously raised on native grass as natural as it was 100 years ago. No sprays or pesticides ever. This is how we can ensure a highly nutrient environment for our animals. Carefully rotating the animals to ensure that premium grass is available with low stress and humane handling are key for quality animals. Approximately 6-7 months of the year, our bison are grazing on this native pasture. Our animals are raised without growth hormones nor unnecessary antibiotics.
Winter months also use natural grazing. We supplement the bison in their pastures with greenfeed, hay and grain that is carefully sourced (non-desiccated) grain to ensure choice supplemental feed to our bison. We also do our own milling of barley and oats to ensure top quality, fresh feed for our animals.
Humanely processed means less stress which results in less adrenaline and hormones released into the meat than is the case with traditional processing.
Big Valley Bison uses bison’s natural behavior to assist in the ongoing stewardship of the native land and to rejuvenate and regenerate depleted land. Healthy land, means healthy soil which gives way to healthy plants and grass which supports healthy animals. Healthy animals means premium quality meat. Healthy land, soil, plants, grass, and animals supports a healthy ecosystems which support a healthy planet.
Regenerative agriculture with bison’s natural behaviors are used to restore any depleted land on the ranch. Regenerative practices enhance biodiversity, and restores soil fertility. Bison’s natural and rhythmic grazing stimulates plant regrowth, enriches soil nutrients, prevents overgrowth, reduces soil compaction, and supports diverse plant species. Their trampling encourages natural composting, leading to improved soil health. These practices also support water retention, decrease erosion, and create habitats for various species, thus fostering resilient landscapes. Through these activities, bison play a pivotal role in nurturing and rejuvenating the land.
By combining bison behaviors with meticulous land management, bison ranching nurtures native land and restores and regenerates depleted land. This supports and restores thriving ecosystems. Thriving ecosystems improve soil health, which, in turn, nurtures healthy and abundant plant growth. The resulting healthy habitats and enriched soils can then sequester more carbon, helping to mitigate climate change and ensure a more sustainable future.
